Link Between Cannabis Use and Suicidality in Young Adults

As the number of lifetime and daily cannabis users increase, so has the number of young adults reporting depression and suicidal thoughts.

A study funded by National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), compared self-reported cannabis use and experiences of depressions/ suicidal thoughts and attempts for 18 to 35-year-olds using 2008 - 2019 National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data. Results indicated that cannabis users, even those who didn't use the drug daily, were at higher risk of depression and suicidal ideation compared to people who did not use.
